Baseball Recap: Gunnison Comes Up Short

Gunnison had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Saturday they dropped down to 2-10 to make it six. They fell 10-6 to the Basalt Longhorns. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Longhorns this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 5-3 on Saturday.

Cesar Marmolejo was cooking despite his team's loss, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with two doubles, two RBI, and one run.

As for Basalt, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 6-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.6 runs over those games.

On Basalt's side, the team relied heavily on Ryder Hutchinson, who fired off two home runs and five RBI while going 2-for-4. Karson Schneider was another key player, going 2-for-4 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Gunnison will welcome Cedaredge at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Cowboys' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bruins have averaged an impressive 10.8 runs per game this season. As for Basalt, they will look to defend their home field on Wednesday against Roaring Fork at 3:00 p.m.
