Basketball Recap: Kathleen Puts Losing Streak Behind Them

Kathleen came into Wednesday's match having lost nine straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Four Corners Coyotes on Wednesday, sneaking past 44-41.

Kathleen's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Gabriela Villegas led the charge by going 10 of 18 on her way to 24 points and seven boards. That's the most rebounds Villegas has posted since back in November of 2023. The team also got some help courtesy of Haley Roper, who posted 12 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Four Corners' defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Briana Carrion, who dropped a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds, and Danielys Pena Ponce, who almost dropped a double-double on 14 points and nine rebounds. That was a full 34.1% of Four Corners' points, marking the sixth time in a row she's had more than a third of the team's points. Another player making a difference was Mia Villanueva, who put up ten points in addition to eight rebounds and five assists.

Kathleen's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-7. As for Four Corners, they have traveled a rocky road recently having lost five of their last six games, which put a noticeable dent in their 2-7 record this season.

Kathleen will welcome Oasis Christian at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Four Corners and McKeel Academy will compete for holiday cheer at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Four Corners has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
