West Mifflin and Belle Vernon are an even 5-5 against one another since April of 2017, but likely not for long. The Titans will challenge the Leopards at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. West Mifflin is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
West Mifflin is probably headed into the match with a chip on their shoulder considering Elizabeth Forward just ended the team's ten-game winning streak on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Warriors by a score of 8-7.
West Mifflin got a good showing from Justin Dillon, who tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Dillon has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in eight consecutive appearances.
At the plate, Jayvon Thompson made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went 1-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one run. Another player making a difference was Chase Maggio, who went 1-for-2 with two runs and one stolen base.
Meanwhile, Belle Vernon entered their tilt with Yough on Friday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They put the hurt on the Cougars with a sharp 10-0 win. The Leopards' pitching crew has been rock solid lately; the team hasn't given up a run in their last three contests.
Braden Andrews tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits over five innings pitched.
On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Cole Matusik, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and one triple. Kole Doppelheuer also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.
Belle Vernon hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. The team has now struck out at least five batters in six consecutive games.
Belle Vernon pushed their record up to 12-3 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. The home wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 0.0 runs on average over those games. As for West Mifflin, their defeat was their first in the conference, dropping their conference record down to 9-1 and their overall record down to 14-4.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. West Mifflin has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 5.2 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Belle Vernon struggles in that department as they've been averaging 5.3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
West Mifflin was able to grind out a solid victory over Belle Vernon in their previous meeting back in April of 2022, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Titans since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
