Softball Recap: Hunter Has No Trouble Against Kearns

Hunter had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 14-run drubbing they dealt Kearns on Tuesday. Hunter was the clear victor by a 17-3 margin over Kearns. The victory continues a trend for the Wolverines in their matchups with the Cougars: they've now won nine in a row.

LEILA AIONO was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out seven batters over five innings while giving up just two earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. That double was her first of the season.

In other batting news, LOIANA IONGI and ALEXA OLSEN did most of the damage at the plate: IONGI went 2-for-3 with two runs, one triple, and one double, while OLSEN scored two runs while going 3-for-3. That's the most hits OLSEN has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was KENYA LAPUAHO, who scored two runs while going 1-for-2.

Hunter pushed their record up to 3-3 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 14.7 runs over those games. As for Kearns, they have been struggling recently as they've lost five of their last six games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-6 record this season.

Hunter is taking a road trip to square off against Cyprus at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Kearns, they will be playing at home against Park City at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Park City has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 13.4 runs per game on average), something Kearns will no doubt try to take advantage of.
