Football Game Preview: North Canyon Rattlers vs. Maryvale Panthers

North Canyon is preparing for their first region matchup of the season on Thursday. They will take on the Maryvale Panthers at 7:00 p.m. North Canyon will be strutting in after a victory while Maryvale will be coming in after a loss.

North Canyon is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Rio Rico: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Rattlers blew the Hawks out of the water with a 49-7 final score. The Rattlers pushed the score to 42-7 by the end of the third, a deficit the Hawks had no chance of recovering from.

North Canyon's receiving core played a big role in the win, headlined by Karlos Romandia and Dom Dampier. Romandia threw for 313 yards and four TDs on only 19 passes while Dampier picked up 190 receiving yards and three scores. Those 190 receiving yards gave Dampier a new career-high.

North Canyon's run defense was locked in: Rio Rico could only muster 3.1 yards per carry. The team can thank Rhett Goodman for the heroic effort on defense: he. North Canyon's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 5.2.

North Canyon didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off four passes before the game was over. Jemorion Barron led the group effort, picking up two of those interceptions all by himself. Jarell Hearod has been hot recently, having also posted six or more total tackles the last four times he's played. North Canyon got some further help from Kevin Silva Lopez: he picked up a sack and made ten total tackles (3.0 for loss).

Meanwhile, Maryvale was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their fourth straight defeat. They took a blow against Combs, falling 58-0. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona football rankings (they are ranked 209th, while the Coyotes are ranked 92nd).

North Canyon's win bumped their record up to 2-3. As for Maryvale, their loss dropped their record down to 1-4.

Everything came up roses for North Canyon against Maryvale in their previous meeting back in November of 2021, as the team secured a 73-0 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Rattlers since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
