Baseball Recap: Cottage Grove Gets the Win

It may have taken eight innings to finish the job, but Cottage Grove ultimately got the result they hoped for on Saturday. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Springfield Millers, sneaking past 5-4. The Lions have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw the Millers, too.

Micah Spear made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out nine over five innings pitched. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Cottage Grove is 3-0-1 when he allows at most one earned run, but 2-5 otherwise. Spear was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances. Those two runs gave him a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Landon Vaughn, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4. Those three hits gave him a new career-high.

The win got Cottage Grove back to even at 5-5-1. As for Springfield, they dropped their record down to 1-7 with the loss, which was their sixth straight at home.

Cottage Grove and Springfield will both get their first taste of in-conference action in their upcoming games. The Lions are set to face off against their familiar foe North Bend at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Springfield will take on rival Eagle Point at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
