Softball Game Preview: San Leandro Pirates vs. Berkeley Yellowjackets

The San Leandro Pirates will face off against the Berkeley Yellowjackets at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. San Leandro's pitching crew has only allowed 3.3 runs per game this season, so Berkeley's hitters will have their work cut out for them.

On Wednesday, San Leandro came up short against Arroyo and fell 7-4.

Meanwhile, Berkeley can bid farewell to their seven-game losing streak thanks to their game on Wednesday. They put the hurt on Mt. Eden with a sharp 11-1 win. The Yellowjackets' offense finally found a way to get into gear: the high-octane performance was a 180-degree turn from their last four games.

Olive Lightfoot tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowing only two hits while striking out eight over 4.1 innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on June Shaller, who went 2-for-4 with four RBI, one triple, and one run. Those four RBI gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Riley Pritchard, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.

Berkeley hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Mt. Eden struck out eight times.

Berkeley's victory bumped their record up to 8-14. As for San Leandro, their defeat was their first in the league, dropping their league record down to 7-1 and their overall record down to 18-5.

San Leandro came out on top in a nail-biter against Berkeley when the teams last played back in March, sneaking past 3-2. Do the Pirates have another victory up their sleeve, or will the Yellowjackets turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
