Baseball Game Preview: Willow Spring Storm vs. Clayton Comets

The Willow Spring Storm will take on the Clayton Comets at 4:00 p.m. on Friday. Willow Spring has given up an average of 8 runs per game this season, so hopefully the team got some pitching drills in this week.

Willow Spring is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. They came out on top against Holly Springs by a score of 16-11 on Wednesday. With that win, the Storm brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Alex Smith looked comfortable as he tossed 1.2 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one walk any time he's pitched this season.

At the plate, Jackson Sherrell was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in April of 2024. Nate Rice was another key player, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with four RBI, one stolen base, and one run.

Willow Spring always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .540. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Clayton didn't have quite enough to beat Willow Spring on Tuesday and fell 5-3.

The victory made it two in a row for Willow Spring and bumps their season record up to 2-3. A key ingredient in that success has been their performance when it comes to hits: they averaged an imposing 10.5 hits in those games compared to only 2.67 in the others. As for Clayton, they now have a losing record of 3-4.

Willow Spring came out on top in a nail-biter against Clayton when the teams last played on Tuesday, sneaking past 5-3. Does Willow Spring have another victory up their sleeve, or will Clayton turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
