Volleyball Recap: Morenci Starts Season with Defeat at Home

Morenci unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They came up short against the Round Valley Elks on Thursday, falling 3-0. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Wildcats of the 3-1 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in August of 2024.

While Morenci was not able to make it on the board, they still kept things close, especially in the second set. The final score came out to 25-19, 25-22, 25-13.

Morenci's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Leayla Mendez-Garcia, who had 13 assists and ten digs, and Jayliana Guzzo, who had six digs.

Morenci wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 1-0 victory against San Miguel on the 30th. As for Round Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 3-2 win against St. Johns on the 2nd.
