Basketball Game Preview: Coronado Islanders vs. Point Loma Pointers

Two dominant guards in Loxly Johnson and Grant Stewart are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Coronado Islanders will be playing in front of their home fans against the Point Loma Pointers at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The two teams are strolling into their matches after big wins in their previous games.

Having struggled with six defeats in a row, Coronado turned things around against San Ysidro on Tuesday. They breezed by the Cougars to the tune of 77-23. The contest marked the Islanders' most dominant win of the season.

Meanwhile, Point Loma waltzed into their game last Monday with five straight wins... but they left with six. They put the hurt on the Sultans with a sharp 78-58 victory. The Pointers have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won eight matches by 20 points or more this season.

Coronado better focus on containing Na'Sean Hardy and Stewart as the pair were huge in Point Loma's win. Hardy dropped a double-double on 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Stewart went 7 of 15 on his way to 19 points and eight rebounds. The dominant performance also gave Hardy a new career-high in blocks (four). Another player making a difference was Jax Marple, who went 5 of 11 en route to 14 points.

Point Loma smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in nine consecutive contests.

The win got Coronado back to even at 8-8. As for Point Loma, their victory bumped their record up to 13-2.

Coronado beat Point Loma 68-60 when the teams last played back in January of 2024. Does Coronado have another victory up their sleeve, or will Point Loma turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
