Basketball Recap: Ty Stephens' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Cape Hatteras over Columbia

Cape Hatteras lost against Columbia last Tuesday, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Cape Hatteras Hurricanes lost 58-37 to the Columbia Wildcats. The Hurricanes just can't catch a break and have now endured four losses in a row.

Several Hurricanes players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Ty Stephens, who posted 15 points. That was a full 40.5% of Cape Hatteras' points, marking the third time in a row Stephens has had more than a third of the team's points. Trae Wyatt was another key player, putting up nine points and five assists.

Jayden Sawyer continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Columbia, going 12-for-19 on his way to 28 points in addition to eight boards and five steals. Sawyer has been hot for a while, having posted 16 or more points the last 14 times he's played. Another player making a difference was Jaimarques Whitley, who went 5-for-10 to rack up 11 points and five rebounds.

Cape Hatteras' defeat dropped their record down to 4-12. As for Columbia, their win ended an 11-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 5-16.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Cape Hatteras will challenge Ocracoke at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. Ocracoke will roll in looking for their 11th straight victory, something Cape Hatteras surely won't give up without a fight. As for Columbia, they will host Mattamuskeet at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
