The Corinth Holders Pirates will take on the Fuquay - Varina Bengals at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Corinth Holders' pitching crew heads into the contest hoping to repeat the dominance they displayed on Tuesday. Everything went their way against Southeast Raleigh as they made off with a 15-0 win. The victory was familiar territory for the Pirates, who have now won five matches in a row.
Elizabeth McKenzie was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in both of her plate appearances. That stolen base was her first of the season.
In other batting news, Corinth Holders let Alyssa Tanner and Mia Gwynn run wild. Tanner went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI, while Gwynn went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one triple, and one RBI. That triple marked the first that Tanner hit this season. Another player making a difference was Megan Poole, who scored a run and stole a base while going 1-for-2.
Corinth Holders always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .905. The last time their OBP was this high was back in March of 2024.
Meanwhile, Fuquay - Varina got the win against Clayton last Thursday by a conclusive 8-1. The win made it back-to-back victories for the Bengals.
Kylie McGrogan spent all seven innings played on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on five hits and racked up six Ks.
On the hitting side, Emma Peacock was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one triple, two RBI, and one run. Julie Selig was another key player, going 2-for-4 with one home run.
Corinth Holders pushed their record up to 10-2 with the win, which was their third straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 1.0 run on average over those games. As for Fuquay - Varina, their win bumped their record up to 7-3.
Tuesday's game will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Corinth Holders hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .342. However, it's not like Fuquay - Varina struggles in that department as they've averaged .316. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Corinth Holders came up short against Fuquay - Varina in their previous meeting back in March, falling 6-2. Will the Pirates have more luck at home instead of on the road? Come back here after the game to get an analysis of the match and other softball content.
