Basketball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Khamauri Wood and Bobby Hawkins Jr. Lead Roanoke Rapids to Victory

Roanoke Rapids had already won two in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 14 points) and they went ahead and made it three on Thursday. They walked away with a 54-43 win over the Gates County Red Barons. Given the Yellowjackets' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 151st, while the Red Barons are ranked 395th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Roanoke Rapids was led to victory by Bobby Hawkins Jr. and Khamauri Wood. Hawkins Jr. dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten boards, while Wood went 6 of 12 on his way to 15 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Trent Seldon, who posted four points and three steals.

Roanoke Rapids' record now sits at 6-1. As for Gates County, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-6.

Roanoke Rapids won't have much time to rest: their next match is against Hertford County at 8:30 p.m. on Friday. Hertford County knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past three contests -- so hopefully Roanoke Rapids likes a good challenge. As for Gates County, they will venture away from home to take on Bertie at 7:30 p.m. on January 3, 2025.
