Covington is 9-1 against Riverside since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Buccs will venture away from home to face off against the Pirates at 11:00 a.m. Covington is coming into the contest hot, having won their last six games.
Covington had to skate by with only a one-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 13-run drubbing they dealt Lehman Catholic on Friday. The Buccs were the clear victors by a 13-0 margin over the Cavaliers. The result was nothing new for the Buccs, who have now won seven matchups by ten runs or more so far this season.
Covington got a massive performance out of Emalyn Johnson, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base. The team also got some help courtesy of Kylie Palsgrove, who went 1-for-2 with one home run, two runs, and one stolen base.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: Covington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in 12 consecutive games.
Miami East hit Riverside with a five-run sixth inning on Friday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Pirates lost 9-3 to the Vikings. The Pirates have struggled against the Vikings recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost meeting.
Riley Dillon put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off ten hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with one home run.
Dillon wasn't the only one making solid contact as three players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Miah Carman, who went 1-for-3 with one double and one RBI.
Covington's record now sits at 13-7. As for Riverside, their defeat dropped their record down to 12-9.
Saturday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Covington hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .380. However, it's not like Riverside struggles in that department as they've averaged .323. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
