Basketball Recap: Calvary Day Proves Higher State Rank Is No Mistake

Calvary Day won the last time they faced Johnson and things went their way on Saturday too. The Calvary Day Cavaliers came out on top against the Johnson Atomsmashers by a score of 59-48. Given the Cavaliers' advantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 80th, while the Atomsmashers are ranked 296th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Johnson's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Favion Kirkwood, who went 7 for 17 on his way to 16 points along with five assists and five boards. Kirkwood's evening made it five games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Quentin James, who posted 11 points and five assists.

Calvary Day has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six games, which provided a nice bump to their 13-6 record this season. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 62.3 points per game. As for Johnson, they have been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last nine contests, which put a noticeable dent in their 8-14 record this season.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Calvary Day will host Jenkins at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Calvary Day will be looking to extend their current three-game winning streak. As for Johnson, they will challenge Islands at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Johnson is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 56.5 points per game this season.
