Basketball Recap: Parrish Community Comes Up Short

Parrish Community's tournament run continued when they took on DeSoto County on Thursday. The Parrish Community Bulls fell 58-45 to the DeSoto County Bulldogs. While losing is never fun, the Bulls can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 400th, while the Bulldogs are ranked 79th).

Despite the defeat, Parrish Community saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Jayna Bowen almost dropped a double-double on 18 points and nine rebounds. What's more, Bowen also racked up five assists, the most she's had since back in January of 2024. Romana Lind was another key player, putting up six points along with six rebounds and four steals.

Leading DeSoto County to victory were Yahri Tyler and Cherish Wiggins. Tyler dropped a double-double on 21 points and 14 boards, while Wiggins went 8 of 18 on her way to 23 points in addition to eight boards and five assists. That makes it four consecutive games in which Tyler has scored at least a third of DeSoto County's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Janeris Bing, who went 5 of 10 on her way to 12 points.

Parrish Community has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-9 record this season. As for DeSoto County, their record is now 10-2.

Parrish Community wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 38-22 loss against Manatee on the 3rd. As for DeSoto County, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 55-43 win against Bradenton Christian on the 3rd.
