Basketball Recap: Elijah Morey's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Brandon over Pearl

After flying high against Meridian last Thursday, Brandon came back down to earth. The Brandon Bulldogs took a 64-54 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pearl Pirates on Friday. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, with their most recent defeat being a 73-70 loss back in January.

Several Bulldogs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Elijah Morey, who posted eight points in addition to six boards and five steals. Those five steals gave Morey a new career-high. Braylon Barnes was another key player, putting up 17 points.

Even though they lost, Brandon smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 17 offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Brandon's loss dropped their record down to 17-12. As for Pearl, their victory was their 16th straight at home, which pushed their record up to 22-7.

The two teams are set to take part in some playoff action in their next matches. Brandon and Ocean Springs will meet in a dog eat dog contest at 6:00 p.m. on February 15th. Brandon is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.5 points per game this season. As for Pearl, they will face off against St. Martin at 7:00 p.m. on February 15th. Pearl knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully St. Martin likes a good challenge.
