Preview: Cape Fear Colts vs. Havelock Rams

The Cape Fear Colts will head out on the road to face off against the Havelock Rams at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Cape Fear comes in on five and Havelock on seven.

With a playoff game on the line, Cape Fear rose to the challenge on Friday. They were the clear victor by a 33-13 margin over Western Alamance. The score was close at the half, but Cape Fear pulled away in the second half with 17 points.

Cape Fear's success was spearheaded by the efforts of Jeremiah Melvin, who picked up 138 receiving yards and two touchdowns, and Geronimo Sanchez, who rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on only 13 carries. Melvin's longest reception was for an incredible 80 yards.

Another reason for the win was Cape Fear's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for six sacks. The heavy lifting was done by Robert Moore and Desmond Harris who racked up five sacks between them.

Meanwhile, Havelock never let their opponents score on Friday. They breezed by Dixon at home to the tune of 62-0. Given Havelock's advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 31st, while Dixon is ranked 296th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Lebron Sharpe and Jonathan Williams were among the main playmakers for Havelock as the former rushed for 151 yards and four touchdowns on only nine carries and the latter rushed for 141 yards and three touchdowns on only seven carries. Sharpe has been hot recently, having posted 100 or more rushing yards the last three times he's played. Jalen Morgan was another key contributor, gaining 120 total yards and a touchdown.

Cape Fear has yet to lose a game at home this season, leaving them with a 9-2 record. Those victories were due in large part to their offensive dominance across that stretch, as they averaged 41.0 points per game. As for Havelock, their win bumped their record up to 11-0.

Here's a few offensive stats to keep an eye on ahead of Friday's game: Cape Fear has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 189.5 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Havelock struggles in that department as they've been even better at 333.7 per game. It's looking like Friday's contest might have some serious battles in the trenches.
