Softball Recap: Junction Takes a Loss

Mason hit Junction with a five-run seventh inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Eagles took an 8-5 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Punchers. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Punchers this season, with their most recent defeat being a 11-6 loss last Tuesday.

Alicia Villanueva was huge no matter where she played even without the win. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off five hits. Villanueva was even better at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. She has been hot, having posted at least one stolen base the last five times she's played.

In other batting news, Catalina Salinas was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one double. Rocky Salinas also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.

Junction's record now sits at 6-12. As for Mason, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 10-7 record this season.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Junction will face off against San Saba at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Armadillos have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 18.27 runs per game on average), something the Eagles will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Mason, they are taking a road trip to square off against Johnson City at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Punchers' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
