Baseball Recap: Derby Wins Going Away Against Wilby

Derby's game last Wednesday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Friday. They were the clear victors by a 9-1 margin over the Wilby Wildcats. The victory continues a trend for the Red Raiders in their matchups with the Wildcats: they've now won eight in a row.

Nikolas Kotucek was a major factor no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out 15 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Those 15 strikeouts gave him a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in three of his four plate appearances.

In other batting news, Brooklyn Fernandez was excellent, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base, two RBI, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April of 2024. Isaac McNeill was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one stolen base and two RBI.

Derby now has a winning record of 2-1. As for Wilby, their defeat was their fifth straight at home dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-2.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Derby will challenge rival Wolcott at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Wilby is set to take on their familiar foe St. Paul Catholic at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
