Softball Recap: John Hardin Comes Up Short

John Hardin was the 11-1 winner over Caverna when they last played one another back in May of 2024, but their luck changed this time around. John Hardin fell just short of Caverna by a score of 11-10 on Tuesday. Even if the Bulldogs couldn't come away with the win, the high-scoring effort was a great turnaround for their hitters, which had struggled int the games prior.

Brylee Varney put in work while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits over four innings pitched. Varney was even better at the plate, scoring two runs and stealing four bases while going 3-for-3.

In other batting news, Hailey Wiley made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-4. Those two runs gave her a new career-high. Patricia Gregory was another key player, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

Even though they lost, John Hardin kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

John Hardin's loss was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season, which dropped their record down to 0-4. As for Caverna, their victory ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 2-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. John Hardin will head out to take on Bardstown at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Caverna, they will venture away from home to challenge Monroe County at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Caverna is facing Monroe County at the right time seeing as Monroe County is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
