Softball Recap: Newburgh Free Academy Starts off Right with Win over Spackenkill

Newburgh Free Academy had to kick off their season on the road on Thursday, but they showed no ill effects. They never let the Spackenkill Spartans get on the board and left with a 14-0 victory. That's more bragging rights for the Goldbacks, who also won the pair's last head-to-head.

Samantha Williams made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out seven over six innings pitched. Williams was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Liana Shaw, who went 1-for-4 with one home run and four RBI. Parker Mullarkey was another key player, scoring two runs while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances.

Newburgh Free Academy always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .537. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Spackenkill only posted an OBP of .100.

Looking ahead, Newburgh Free Academy will challenge Warwick at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Spackenkill, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Red Hook at 4:15 p.m. on April 7.
