Volleyball Recap: Santa Margarita Falls Short Against Ranked Mater Dei

Santa Margarita faced Mater Dei in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Eagles lost 3-0 to the Monarchs. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Monarchs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 back in March.

Santa Margarita was held off the scoreboard, but that almost wasn't the case: they kept the second set very close. Once all was said and done, the final score wound up at 25-21, 25-22, 25-15.

Among those leading the charge was Jake Newman, who had six digs and one block. He is also on a roll when it comes to assists, as he's now posted 16 or more in each of the last 11 games he's played.

This is the second loss in a row for Santa Margarita and nudges their season record down to 19-7. As for Mater Dei, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 20-10-2 record this season.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Santa Margarita will take on rival St. John Bosco at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Meanwhile, Mater Dei is set to face off against their familiar foe Servite at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
