Independence triumphant thanks to a strong effort from Dominic Mason

Recap: Independence vs. Briar Woods Falcons

It may have taken double overtime to finish the job, but Independence ultimately got the result they hoped for on Wednesday. They managed a 59-55 win over Briar Woods. Having run the score up that high, both teams might be doing some extra defensive drills very soon.

Dominic Mason was a one-man wrecking crew for Independence as he almost dropped a double-double on ten points and nine rebounds. Mason also grabbed two steals for the first time this season. JJ Johnson was another key contributor, scoring 13 points.

Despite the loss, Briar Woods saw an underclassman step up: Ryan Brzezanski dropped a double-double on 29 points and 16 rebounds. Brzezanski is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last five games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Devon Pettibone, who scored 15 points along with two steals.

Even though they lost, Briar Woods smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Independence only pulled down four offensive rebounds.

Independence has been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests, which provided a nice bump to their 9-12 record this season. As for Briar Woods, their loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 9-13.

Independence will be playing in front of their home fans against Briar Woods at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Briar Woods has been getting the ball to fall more lately as they've increased their point totals each of their last three games.
