Softball Preview: Mt. Carmel Golden Aces vs. Edwards County Lions

Mt. Carmel has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Edwards County Lions at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Mt. Carmel is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.4 runs per game this season.

Mt. Carmel lost 13-1 to Mt. Vernon on Tuesday. The result shouldn't come as a shock considering that's the fewest runs Mt. Carmel has scored all season.

Mt. Carmel saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Parr, who went 1-for-3 with a double.

Meanwhile, Edwards County was able to grind out a solid victory over Chester on Saturday, taking the game 7-4. The win made it back-to-back victories for Edwards County.

Allison Groff made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed seven innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. Groff has been consistent recently: she hasn't pitched less than six innings in three consecutive pitching appearances. Groff was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of her four plate appearances with a double and an RBI.

In other batting news, Lily Jones was excellent, going 1-for-2 with two runs and a triple. Another player making a difference was Danika Phillips, who scored a run while going 2-for-4.

Mt. Carmel's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 13-8. As for Edwards County, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups, which provided a nice bump to their 21-11 record this season.

Everything went Mt. Carmel's way against Edwards County in their previous meeting back in May of 2023 as Mt. Carmel made off with a 12-6 win.
