Basketball Recap: Spackenkill Falls Despite Big Games from Juliana Fernandes and Maryclare Parker-Stark

Spackenkill suffered their closest defeat since January 29, 2024 on Tuesday. They fell just short of the Rondout Valley Ganders by a score of 45-42. The Spartans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Ganders earlier this season, when they won 50-34.

Despite the loss, Spackenkill had strong showings from Maryclare Parker-Stark, who went 6-for-12 to rack up 13 points and eight boards, and Juliana Fernandes, who posted 13 points. Those 13 points gave Fernandes a new career-high.

Even though they lost, Spackenkill smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in three consecutive contests.

Spackenkill has traveled a rocky road recently having lost four of their last five matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 10-8 record this season. The win made it two in a row for Rondout Valley and bumps their season record up to 5-10.

Spackenkill has already played their next game, a 52-47 defeat against Red Hook on the 20th. As for Rondout Valley, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 31-23 victory against Millbrook on the 19th.
