Basketball Recap: Javon Brewton's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Prairie View over Brighton

Prairie View lost against Brighton back in January of 2024 and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Tuesday. The Prairie View Thunderhawks took a 65-61 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Brighton Bulldogs. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Thursday (55), the Thunderhawks still had to take the loss.

Prairie View's loss came despite a true team effort from the offense, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Javon Brewton, who went 8 of 15 en route to 22 points and seven boards. Brewton's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Chidiebere Akotaobi, who made all 5 shots he took to post 10 points in addition to five rebounds and four blocks.

Leading Brighton to victory were Vance Martinez and Austin Sickler. Martinez went 7 for 16 on his way to 19 points along with eight boards and three steals, while Sickler posted 20 points and five rebounds. Sickler is on a roll when it comes to points, as he's now scored 16 or more in the last three games he's played. Joshua Mavinga also deserves some recognition as he posted his first block of the season.

This is the second loss in a row for Prairie View and nudges their season record down to 6-6. As for Brighton, they now have a winning record of 5-4.

Prairie View has already played their next matchup, a 73-50 defeat against Mountain Range on the 16th. As for Brighton, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 60-56 loss against Riverdale Ridge on the 16th.
