Basketball Game Preview: Layton Christian Academy Eagles vs. Payson Lions

Layton Christian Academy has gone 3-0 against Payson recently and they'll look to pad the win column further on Friday. The Layton Christian Academy Eagles will host the Payson Lions at 7:00 p.m. Layton Christian Academy knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past five games -- so hopefully Payson likes a good challenge.

Layton Christian Academy is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Utah's top teams: Timpanogos, who was ranked 15th at the time (Layton Christian Academy was ranked fourth). Layton Christian Academy strolled past Timpanogos with points to spare on Tuesday, taking the game 78-61. The Eagles pushed the score to 68-43 by the end of the third, a deficit the Timberwolves cut but never quite recovered from.

Tyrin Jones continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 9 for 12 en route to 20 points along with seven rebounds and five assists. The contest was his fourth in a row with at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Samuel Obenjo, who made all 6 shots he took for 12 points and six boards.

They weren't the only one working in the assists department: Layton Christian Academy was working as a unit and finished the game with 17 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Meanwhile, Payson was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap on Tuesday as they fell 66-60 to Uintah. While the Lions didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Utes 19-15 in the first quarter.

Layton Christian Academy's win was their fourth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 13-8. The wins came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 67.8 points per game. As for Payson, their loss dropped their record down to 13-4.

Layton Christian Academy took their victory against Payson when the teams last played on January 7th by a conclusive 73-50. Will Layton Christian Academy repeat their success, or does Payson have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
