Basketball Recap: Markevion Jones' Big Game Can't Quite Lead Thomson over Putnam County

If Thomson was riding high fresh off their 64-39 takedown of Emanuel County Institute last Monday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Thomson Bulldogs took a 61-51 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Putnam County War Eagles on Friday. While losing is never fun, the Bulldogs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia basketball rankings (they are ranked 206th, while the War Eagles are ranked 29th).

Several Bulldogs players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Markevion Jones, who posted 12 points. Jer'Meer Hatcher was another key player, putting up ten points.

Putnam County's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Jmari Greene, who went 8 of 20 on his way to 19 points. Greene is also on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last 11 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Jaylin Harper, who went 5 for 10 on his way to 11 points in addition to five assists and three steals.

Thomson's loss dropped their record down to 6-4. As for Putnam County, the victory keeps them at an undefeated 14-0.

Thomson has already played their next game, a 61-38 defeat against South Atlanta on the 28th. As for Putnam County, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Jones County at 7:30 p.m. on January 4, 2025. Putnam County knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 14 matches -- so hopefully Jones County likes a good challenge.
