Prep picks scarce in first 10 rounds of MLB draft

After making a splash with three prep players in the first three picks, high school baseball players were a scarce commodity over the first 10 rounds of the Major League Baseball draft.

Royce Lewis of JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.), Hunter Greene of Notre Dame (SO) (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and MacKenzie Gore of Whiteville (N.C.) were the first players chosen in the draft that started Monday, marking the first time since 1990 that three high school players were chosen with the first three picks.

However, only 11 total preps (not including Canada or Puerto Rico) were chosen in the first round and only 64 were chosen in the first 10 rounds. Only two preps were chosen in rounds 7-10 with none in the ninth and 10th rounds.



California and Florida tied for the most players chosen with 13, while Texas was next with seven.

Two schools had a pair of teammates selected. Huntington Beach (Calif.) had Nick Pratto go to the Royals at No. 14 and Hagen Danner taken at No. 61 to the Blue Jays. Meanwhile, Monsignor McClancy (Queens, N.Y.) had Quentin Holmes chosen No. 64 by the Indians and Charlie Neuweiler picked at No. 150 by the Royals.

Alaska had Jonny Homza of South (Anchorage) chosen with the No. 138 overall pick by the San Diego Padres. It's the second-highest pick of an Alaskan player, surpassed only by the choice of Brian Montalbo of Dimond (Anchorage) at 130 in 2000.

Among the draftees included one son of a former World Series hero in Jacob Gonzalez of Chaparral (Scottsdale, Ariz.). He is the son of former Arizona Diamondback Luis Gonzalez.

The draft continues today with rounds 11-40 and a number of highly rated players remain on the board. Among those still available from the MaxPreps Top 100 seniors list include:

No. 22 Cole Turney, outfielder from Fort Bend Travis (Richmond, Texas)

No. 24 Kyle Hurt, pitcher from Torrey Pines (San Diego)
