Katahdin is a perfect 9-0 against Madawaska since May of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Saturday. The Cougars will be defending their home field for the first time this season when they go up against the Owls at 1:00 p.m. The two teams are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.
Katahdin had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the 12-run drubbing they dealt Washburn on Monday. The Cougars put the hurt on the Beavers with a sharp 16-4 victory. The Cougars haven't had any issues with the Beavers recently, as the game was their ninth consecutive win against them.
Connor Edwards was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out nine batters over 4.1 innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off one hit. Edwards was also stellar in the batter's box, going 4-for-5 with five stolen bases, four runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Josh Martin, who went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, three runs, and four RBI. Calvin Richardson was another key player, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and one double.
Katahdin kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Washburn only managed one hit.
Meanwhile, after only one run in their last contest, Madawaska made sure to put some runs up on the board against Central Aroostook on Tuesday. The Owls were the clear victors by a 13-3 margin over the Panthers.
Like Katahdin, Madawaska also got a great game from a two-way player: Matt Ayotte. On the mound, Ayotte struck out ten batters over five innings while giving up three earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). Meanwhile, Isaac Beaulieu tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Those ten strikeouts gave Ayotte a new career-high. At bat, Ayotte went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI, while Beaulieu got on base in all five of his plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI.
In other batting news, Josh Querze was incredible, going a perfect 5-for-5 with six stolen bases, four runs, and one double. Those six stolen bases gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Carter Guerrette, who got on base in three of his five plate appearances with five stolen bases, two RBI, and one run.
Katahdin's victory bumped their record up to 2-0. As for Madawaska, the win got them back to even at 1-1.
Katahdin came out on top in a nail-biter against Madawaska when the teams last played back in June of 2024, sneaking past 5-3. Will the Cougars repeat their success, or do the Owls have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
