Myrtle is probably headed into the contest with a chip on their shoulder considering Water Valley just ended the team's four-game winning streak on Friday. They were just a hair shy of victory and fell 21-20 to the Blue Devils.
Meanwhile, Bruce posted their closest victory since October 11, 2024 on Friday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past Palmer 30-28. The victory continues a trend for the Trojans in their matchups with the Dragons: they've now won three in a row.
A big part of Bruce's win came down to the chemistry between Joshua Long and his top target Jermaine Jackson. Long threw for 173 yards and three TDs while Jackson picked up 152 receiving yards and three scores. Those three receiving touchdowns gave Jackson a new career-high.
One reason for the win was Bruce's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for four sacks. Marcus Brownlee was especially locked on to Palmer's QB and sacked him twice. Brownlee has been hot recently, having also posted nine or more total tackles the last four times he's played. Corbin Bowling was another major factor on D, picking up a sack, forcing one fumble, and making five total tackles (1.5 for loss).
Bruce's victory bumped their record up to 6-2. As for Myrtle, their loss was their first in the district, dropping their district record down to 2-1 and their overall record down to 6-2.
Friday's matchup might be decided on the ground. Myrtle has been excellent on the ground this season, having averaged 188.2 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Bruce struggles in that department as they've been averaging 195 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's game turns into a tough fight on the ground.
Myrtle strolled past Bruce in their previous meeting back in October of 2024 by a score of 42-28. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
