Preview: Snow Canyon Warriors vs. Hurricane Tigers
Snow Canyon is 8-2 against Hurricane since February of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Friday. The Snow Canyon Warriors will be playing in front of their home fans against the Hurricane Tigers at 7:00 p.m. The timing is sure in Snow Canyon's favor as the team sits on 15 straight wins at home (dating back to last season) while Hurricane has been banged up by 15 consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.
On Wednesday, things could have been worse for Snow Canyon, but they could have been a whole lot better as they took a 70-54 loss to Dixie. While losing is never fun, Snow Canyon can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Utah basketball rankings (they are ranked 29th, while Dixie is ranked fourth).
The losing side was boosted by Owen Mackay, who scored 27 points along with three steals. That was a full 50% of Snow Canyon's points, marking the fifth time in a row he's earned more than a third of the team's points. The team also got some help courtesy of Drey Smith, who scored 11 points along with five rebounds.
Meanwhile, Hurricane pushed their score all the way to 64 on Wednesday, but even that wasn't enough to win. They took a 76-64 hit to the loss column at the hands of Crimson Cliffs. The loss unfortunately continues a disappointing trend for Hurricane in their matchups with Crimson Cliffs: they've now lost seven in a row.
Hurricane's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Quinn Gubler, who scored 19 points, and Rj Hurst who scored 17 points. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Gubler has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Calan Hughes, who scored nine points along with 12 rebounds.
Snow Canyon's loss dropped their record down to 8-6. As for Hurricane, they have been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last seven games, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-10 record this season.
This contest is shaping up to be a blowout: Snow Canyon hasn't had any problem running up the score this season, having only averaged 59.3 points per game. However, it's not like Hurricane struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 59.1 points per game. The only thing between Snow Canyon and another offensive beatdown is Hurricane. Will they be able to keep them contained?
Snow Canyon beat Hurricane 50-38 in their previous matchup back in February of 2023. Does Snow Canyon have another victory up their sleeve, or will Hurricane turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
