Preview: Bladensburg Mustangs vs. Laurel Spartans
The Bladensburg Mustangs will be playing in front of their home fans against the Laurel Spartans at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. The matchup should be an exciting one, as these teams are ranked near one another in Maryland (Bladensburg is ranked 171st, while Laurel is ranked 183rd).
Bladensburg fell victim to Oxon Hill's stalwart defense on Saturday and couldn't make it onto the board. They had to suffer through a rough 48-0 loss at the hands of the Clippers. Bladensburg was already down big by the end of the third quarter and they stayed that way after failing to score in the fourth.
Meanwhile, Laurel never let their opponents score on Friday. They strolled past Northwestern with points to spare, taking the game 18-0. The victory made it back-to-back wins for Laurel.
Laurel's success was spearheaded by the efforts of King james Corbett, who rushed for 64 yards on only seven carries, and Nathan Watkins, who rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Another reason for the win was Laurel's imposing defense, which managed to get into the backfield for nine sacks. It was a group effort, with three picking up two apiece.
Bladensburg has traveled a rocky road recently, as they've lost five of their last six matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 3-5 record this season. As for Laurel, their victory bumped their record up to 3-4.
Everything came up roses for Bladensburg against Laurel in their previous meeting back in October of 2016 as the team secured a 44-0 victory. Does Bladensburg have another victory up their sleeve, or will Laurel turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
