Rossville is 9-1 against Tri-County since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Thursday. The Hornets will host the Cavaliers at 5:30 p.m. Rossville is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 8.5 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Rossville beat Harrison 9-6. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Hornets.
Avery Layton was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up five earned (and one unearned) runs off 11 hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than 13 strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and one double. That home run marked the first that she launched this season.
Layton wasn't the only one making solid contact as six players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Caydence Robey, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4. That run was Robey's first of the season. Addi Gorbett was another, scoring two runs while going 2-for-4.
Rossville kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least ten hits every time they've taken the field this season.
Meanwhile, Tri-County got the win against Covington on Monday by a conclusive 15-3. The Cavaliers have beaten the Trojans the last three times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Trojans has come to flipping the script.
Like Rossville, Tri-County also got a great game from a two-way player: Madilyn Nevitt. She struck out nine batters over 3.2 innings while giving up no earned runs off four hits (and only one walk). Nevitt was also stellar in the batter's box, scoring three runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in doubles (two).
In other batting news, Grace Luck was a standout: she scored two runs and stole a base while going 2-for-3. Another player making a difference was Bella Dominguez, who scored a run and stole two bases while going 2-for-3.
Rossville pushed their record up to 3-1 with the victory, which was their 13th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.2 runs over those games. As for Tri-County, they now have a winning record of 2-1.
Thursday's contest will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Rossville hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .382. However, it's not like Tri-County struggles in that department as they've averaged .443. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Everything went Rossville's way against Tri-County when the teams last played back in May of 2024, as Rossville made off with an 11-1 victory. Will the Hornets repeat their success, or do the Cavaliers have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
