Basketball Recap: Zymere Somerville's Big Game Can't Quite Lead King's Christian Academy over Martinsburg

After flying high against Calverton last Tuesday, King's Christian Academy came back down to earth. The King's Christian Academy Eagles took a 69-60 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Martinsburg Bulldogs on Saturday. While losing is never fun, the Eagles can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 196th in Maryland, while the Bulldogs are ranked eighth in West Virginia).

Several Eagles players turned in solid performances despite ultimately coming up short. Perhaps the best among those players was Zymere Somerville, who went 9 of 20 en route to 24 points and five boards. The dominant performance gave Somerville a new career-high in points. The team also got some help courtesy of Earl B. Edmonds, who went 6 for 11 on his way to 12 points in addition to seven rebounds and five assists.

Even though they lost, King's Christian Academy smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 13 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive rebounds in six consecutive contests.

King's Christian Academy has been struggling recently as they've lost eight of their last ten matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season. As for Martinsburg, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games, which provided a nice bump to their 6-2 record this season.

King's Christian Academy didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 88-65 defeat against Washington on the 25th. As for Martinsburg, they will face off against Musselman at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
