Baseball Recap: Corning Comes Up Short

Corning extended their losing streak to five on Friday, dropping their season record down to 2-16 in the process. They came up short against the Live Oak Lions, falling 8-2. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Lions this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 7-1 on Tuesday.

Corning saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Brandon Cordova, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one RBI.

As for Live Oak, their win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 11-10. Considering they have won nine contests by more than five runs this season, Friday's blowout was nothing new.

On Live Oak's side, Farron Gomez and Bradley Perigo were major factors no matter where they played. Throwing, Gomez struck out 11 batters over five innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. Meanwhile, Perigo tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. Live Oak is 4-1 when Gomez allows one or fewer earned runs, but 7-9 otherwise. At bat, Gomez got on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and two RBI, while Perigo went 2-for-4 with two runs and one double. That's the most RBI Gomez has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, Luis Carrasco was excellent, going 1-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Live Oak's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is undefeated (and 6-10 when he doesn't). Kaden Lee was another key player, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Corning will square off against Las Plumas at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds will roll in looking for their fifth straight victory, something the Cardinals surely won't give up without a fight. As for Live Oak, they will take on Orland at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The last four games the Trojans have played have been within two runs, so don't be surprised if it's a close one.
