Baseball Preview: Southside Cardinals vs. Winn Mavericks

Southside hasn't had much luck against Winn recently, but that could start to change on Saturday. The Cardinals will challenge the Mavericks at 2:00 p.m. Both come into the contest bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Southside took a loss when they played away from home last Friday, but their home fans gave them all the motivation they needed on Thursday. They walked away with a 7-2 victory over Harlandale.

Aiden Garcia made a big impact no matter where he played. He pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with three stolen bases and two runs. Southside is 2-1 when Garcia posts two or more stolen bases, but 11-12 otherwise.

In other batting news, Trey Gonzalez was excellent, going a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most runs he has posted since back in February. Winn has been performing well recently as they've won 11 of their last 14 games. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 6.4 runs over those games. As for Southside, the win got them back to even at 13-13.

Southside came up short against Winn in their previous meeting back in March, falling 9-4. Can the Cardinals avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
