No. 6 Serra battling No. 16 De La Salle headlines slate.

Week 3 of high school football action in California includes a handful of intriguing interstate matchups, but the headlining game is a battle between the current Northern California power Serra (San Mateo) and the longtime standard De La Salle (Concord).

No. 6 Serra, led by De La Salle graduate Patrick Walsh, has been to two straight CIF Open Division finals, while the No. 16 Spartans are legendary not only in NorCal circles but nationally as well. The Padres beat De La Salle 24-21 last season en route to a 13-1 season, falling only in the Open Division final to MaxPreps National Champion St. John Bosco (Bellflower).

Serra opened its season last week with a 21-14 win over the third leg of the NorCal power trio Folsom. De La Salle, meanwhile lost its opener 35-14 to No. 5 Orange Lutheran (Orange).

Speaking of Orange Lutheran, the fifth-ranked Lancers host Washington power Eastside Catholic (Sammamish) on Friday. In last week's win over De La Salle, junior quarterback T.J. Lateef went 28 for 45 for 365 yards and three touchdowns.

State and national No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) continues its out-of-state slate with 2-0 Creekside (Fairburn, Ga.). The Monarchs also are 2-0 after rolling over Bingham (South Jordan, Utah) 48-14 last week behind Elijah Brown, who threw for three touchdowns and improved his career record to 31-1.

No. 2 and national No. 3 St. John Bosco (Bellflower) also has an out-of-state opponent, hosting Friendship Collegiate Academy (Washington, D.C.). The Braves earned a national win last week, beating St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) 20-7. Senior quarterback Caleb Sanchez threw for 339 yards and two touchdowns. The Braves have now won 16 straight out-of-state games.
