Baseball Recap: Tuesday's Victory Is Greenbrier East's Fourth in Last Five Outings

Greenbrier East came out on top against Independence on Tuesday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run third inning. The Spartans took their matchup against the Patriots 10-6. That's the second time they've managed to beat them this season, as they also won 4-3 on April 12th.

Brady May made a splash no matter where he played. On the mound, he struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and four unearned) runs off ten hits. He has been consistent recently: he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since April 5th.

In other batting news, Graham Brewster and Zion Detko did most of the damage at the plate: Brewster went 3-for-5 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI, while Detko went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one triple, and one run. Detko is becoming a predictor of Greenbrier East's success: when he posts at least two stolen bases the team is undefeated (and 7-9 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Clay Patton, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and one double.

Greenbrier East kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 15 hits. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Independence only managed ten hits.

Greenbrier East is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 16-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. As for Independence, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-10-1.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Greenbrier East will square off against Woodrow Wilson at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Flying Eagles have averaged an impressive 8.7 runs per game this season. As for Independence, they will face off against Midland Trail at 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
