Football Recap: Havelock Rams vs. Laney Buccaneers
Havelock won the last time they faced Laney, and things went their way on Friday too. The Havelock Rams simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat the Laney Buccaneers 46-15 at home. Given the Rams' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina football rankings (they are ranked 18th, while the Buccaneers are ranked 85th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Jaylen Hewitt was a one-man wrecking crew for Havelock as he threw for 358 yards and six touchdowns. Lebron Sharpe helped Hewitt out on the ground, rushing for 144 yards and a touchdown while picking up 7.2 yards per carry.
Havelock's defense was in the mix too, especially the secondary: they snagged three passes before it was all said and done. It was truly a group effort as Markell Carter, Kamari George, and Jonathan Williams picked up one apiece. Perhaps unsurprisingly given the score, Havelock was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 244 rushing yards. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Laney only rushed for 85.
The victory made it two in a row for Havelock and bumps their season record up to 2-0. As for Laney, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-1.
Havelock will have plenty of time to enjoy the win as they don't play again for a while. They'll take on West Craven at 7:00 p.m. on September 12th. Havelock is looking to tack on another W to their three-game streak on the road dating back to last season. As for Laney, they will get a bit of extra time to process the loss as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Cape Fear at 7:00 p.m. on September 13th.
