Baseball Recap: Elk Grove Takes a Loss

Elk Grove had lost seven straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 9-21 to make it eight. They came up short against the Palatine Pirates, falling 8-2. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-6 two weeks ago.

Elk Grove saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Cooper Casterton, who went 1-for-4 with one run. Another was Myles Schwartz, who got on base in all four of his plate appearances with one run.

As for Palatine, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 24-9 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.6 runs over those games.

On Palatine's side, Ian Sherman and Toby Peterson were major factors while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Sherman pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. Meanwhile, Peterson didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out seven over five innings pitched. Sherman has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 14 consecutive appearances. At bat, Sherman went 2-for-4 with two runs, while Peterson went 2-for-3 with one home run, one triple, and two RBI. That's the most hits Sherman has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Adrian Santamaria was excellent, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI he has posted since back in April. Joe Riley was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs and one RBI.

Coming up, Elk Grove will face off against St. Francis at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Palatine, they will square off against Niles West at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
