Recap: Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets vs. Pioneer Diamondbacks
Two teams were on the hunt for playoff glory, but unfortunately for the Edcouch-Elsa Yellowjackets, they weren't the ones who walked away with it. They took a hard 48-29 fall against Pioneer on Thursday. Edcouch-Elsa was given a dose of their own medicine in this game as Pioneer apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in October of 2021.
Edcouch-Elsa's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Elijah Trevino, who threw for 171 yards and two touchdowns, and Jayreed Amaya who gained 88 total yards and a touchdown.
Even if they lost, Edcouch-Elsa's defensive line sure didn't make it easy: Pioneer's QB was sacked five times before it was all said and done. Pioneer's QB won't forget John Torres anytime soon given Torres sacked him twice.
Leading Pioneer to victory were Dylan Tijerina and Julian Valdez. Tijerina rushed for 220 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 11.6 yards per carry, while Valdez rushed for 152 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 9.5 yards per carry. Tijerina has been hot recently, having posted two or more rushing touchdowns the last five times he's played.
Edcouch-Elsa has been struggling recently, as they've lost six of their last eight matches, which put a noticeable dent in their 4-7 record this season. As for Pioneer, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 10-1.
Edcouch-Elsa does not have any more games scheduled as of now. Pioneer will face off against Liberty Hill at 7:00 p.m. on November 17th. Hopefully Liberty Hill focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up five on Friday.
