Basketball Recap: West Grand Mustangs vs. Monticello Buckaroo
West Grand had to hit the road for their first game and it wasn't the result they were hoping for. They fell 51-39 to the Monticello Buckaroo on Thursday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Mustangs of the 46-25 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2024.
Despite the loss, West Grand still got an impressive performance from Sanjay Geffers, who shot 60% from beyond the arc on his way to 25 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals. Another player making a difference was Jalen Geffers, who posted seven points.
Monticello got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Jackson Keyes out in front who went 7-for-12 en route to 19 points. Those 19 points gave Keyes a new career-high. Kord Young was another key player, almost dropping a double-double with ten points and nine boards.
The win got Monticello back to even at 1-1.
Coincidentally, West Grand and Monticello will both be playing Ouray the next time they take the court. The Buckaroo will head out to face the Trojans at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, while the Mustangs will play them later in the day, at 5:45 p.m.
