Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Comes Up Short

Cardinal Newman extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping them down to 3-23. They were dealt an 84-42 loss at the hands of the Heathwood Hall Episcopal Highlanders. The Cardinals were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 44-19.

Cardinal Newman's defeat came despite a true team effort with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Joseph Smith, who posted nine points and three steals. Miles Neven also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

As for Heathwood Hall Episcopal, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 14-7. They have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won nine games by 30 points or more this season.

Heathwood Hall Episcopal's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Henry Morris led the charge by going 7-for-8 to rack up 16 points and five boards. That's the most points Morris has posted since back in November of 2024. Xander Pertile was another key player, shooting 83% from the field en route to 13 points in addition to seven rebounds and three steals.

We've got plenty of inter-region action coming up soon. Cardinal Newman will challenge rival Northside Christian Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Heathwood Hall Episcopal is set to face off against their familiar foe Ben Lippen at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
