Paramount hasn't had much luck against Downey recently, but that could start to change on Tuesday. The Pirates will be playing in front of their home fans against the Vikings at 3:15 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Paramount 1.3, Downey 2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
Paramount proved they can win big on Saturday (they won by 11) and on Saturday they proved they can win the close ones too. They had just enough and edged out Mira Costa 3-1. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Pirates have posted since March 29, 2025.
Paramount saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Samantha Diaz, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run and one double. Those two hits gave Diaz a new career-high. CLARISSA NORIEGA also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.
Meanwhile, Downey waltzed into their matchup on Saturday with four straight wins... but they left with five. Their pitcher stepped up to hand the Cougars a 5-0 shutout.
Leilani Kaiwi Gonzales made a big impact while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she didn't allow a single earned run over six innings pitched. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, one triple, and one double.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Delilah Navarro, who went 3-for-4 with two runs, one double, and one RBI.
Downey was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .438. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Capistrano Valley only posted a batting average of .217.
Paramount's win bumped their record up to 4-1-1. As for Downey, their victory bumped their record up to 6-1.
Tuesday's game might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Paramount has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .479. However, it's not like Downey struggles in that department as they've averaged .435. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
