Softball Recap: Fergus Falls Takes a Loss

Fergus Falls had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 0-3 to make it six. They lost 12-2 to the Alexandria Cardinals. The Otters were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in April of 2024.

As for Alexandria, their victory was their first in the conference, bumping their conference record up to 1-2 and their overall record up to 4-2. The result was nothing new for the Cardinals, who have now won three matchups by seven runs or more so far this season.

For Alexandria's part, Lauren Goetsch was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run over five innings pitched. Goetsch has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI. That RBI marked the first that she has brought in this season.

In other batting news, Ava Klimek and Addy Johnson did most of the damage at the plate: Klimek went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, two runs, and two doubles, while Johnson went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, one triple, and two RBI. Those two doubles gave Klimek a new career-high. Maari Kvidt was another key player, getting on base in two of her three plate appearances with four stolen bases and two runs.

Coming up, Fergus Falls will look to defend their home field on Tuesday against St. Cloud Cathedral at 5:00 p.m. As for Alexandria, they will head out to challenge Rocori at 4:30 p.m. on Monday.
