Football Game Preview: St. Joseph Flyers vs. St. Joseph Academy Bloodhounds

St. Joseph hasn't had much luck against St. Joseph Academy recently, but that could start to change on Friday. The Flyers are taking a road trip to challenge the Bloodhounds at 7:00 p.m. St. Joseph Academy took a loss in their last matchup and will be looking to turn the tables on St. Joseph, who comes in off a win.

St. Joseph is headed into the contest after thoroughly thrashing St. John XXIII: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that the Flyers blew the Lions out of the water with a 55-12 final score. The game was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 41-6.

The home team had won the previous three meetings between St. Joseph Academy and Port Isabel, and Port Isabel kept the tradition alive. The Bloodhounds fell just short of the Tarpons by a score of 34-32 two weeks ago.

St. Joseph will have to keep a close watch on Gavin Cisneros and Mauricio Vega, a pair of players who had a big impact on St. Joseph Academy's prior game. Cisneros rushed for 173 yards while picking up 10.2 yards per carry, while Vega rushed for 123 yards and three TDs. Cisneros' rushing production has been exceptional recently as that marked his third straight game with at least 153 rushing yards.

St. Joseph pushed their record up to 6-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. Those home victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 45.2 points over those games. As for St. Joseph Academy, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-5.

St. Joseph took a serious blow against St. Joseph Academy in their previous matchup back in October of 2024, falling 50-7. Thankfully for the Flyers, Claudio Torres (who rushed for 111 yards and a pair of scores on only 12 carries, and also picked up 56 receiving yards) won't be suiting up this time.
