Baseball Recap: Seven Straight Road Wins for Sugar-Salem

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Sugar-Salem). Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Snake River Panthers a 26-0 shutout on Tuesday. The Diggers have beaten the Panthers the last five times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Panthers has come to flipping the script.

Kace Malstrom made a splash no matter where he played. He pitched three innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He also tossed no earned runs, which is notable because Sugar-Salem is 2-1 when he allows at most three earned runs, but 2-3 otherwise. Malstrom was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other batting news, Jack Gardner was incredible, going 3-for-5 with one home run, seven RBI, and three runs. Those seven RBI gave him a new career-high. Tragen Mattson was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.

Sugar-Salem kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 20 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in three consecutive matches.

Sugar-Salem's victory was their seventh straight on the road dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-4. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 11.3 runs over those games. As for Snake River, they now have a losing record of 2-3.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Sugar-Salem will head out to face off against Thunder Ridge at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. Sugar-Salem is facing Thunder Ridge at the right time seeing as Thunder Ridge is stuck on a four-game losing streak. As for Snake River, a feisty cat fight will be fought as Snake River Panthers take on South Fremont Cougars at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday. South Fremont will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each game than the last.
