Basketball Recap: Lakeland Takes a Loss

After flying high against Western Wayne last Monday, Lakeland came back down to earth. The Lakeland Chiefs were beaten by the Riverside Vikings 80-35 on Thursday. While losing is never fun, the Chiefs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Pennsylvania basketball rankings (they are ranked 467th, while the Vikings are ranked 35th).

When it comes to explaining why Lakeland lost, don't look at Dylan Kopa. Despite the final result, he posted 17 points and six rebounds. Cole Tonkin also deserves some recognition as he grabbed his first steal of the season.

Even though they lost, Lakeland smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with ten offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in three consecutive matches.

Lakeland dropped their record down to 5-9 with the loss, which was their fifth straight on the road. As for Riverside, the win (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 12-1.

Lakeland wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next game, a 52-36 defeat against Mid Valley on the 20th. As for Riverside, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, an 83-45 victory against Notre Dame on the 18th.
